The first corundum deposits
were found as early as 1898, in the Townships of Carlow and Raglan. They
were not mentioned until 1899, when Queen's University - School of Mining,
by: Professor Miller brought students to the area to examine the corundum
belt.
By 1901, New Carlow's Company deposits had been discovered and assessed.
Carlow's Burgess Company Mine was in production by 1906. The mine was
active for eleven years when it closed in 1917 and all others closed by
1921.
The only one to remain in operation during the 2nd World War was the
Craigmont Mine.
